Masking in Classrooms: Accessibility for Teachers with Disabilities Presented by: Ms. Jessica King & Ms. Destiny Islas, Cal State Long Beach Location: I-104 Students in the PreK-12 system depend on teachers and administrators to demonstrate positive examples of career exploration, self-advocacy, and medical prioritization. For students with disabilities, it’s even more essential to create safe communities of diversity and inclusion with role models that understand their experiences and challenges. But barriers against medical health and disabilities are continuously enforced, ignored, and permitted at many school sites, preventing disabled college students from becoming teachers and current disabled teachers from staying in their careers. Therefore, schools must facilitate these conversations by supporting disabled teachers in utilizing their accommodations inside classrooms, on the playground, and every other environment where teachers interact with the student population. This presentation will explore the current literature and research gaps in accommodating teachers with permanent/temporary and visible/invisible disabilities, then discuss how disabled and non-disabled teachers and administrators can approach disability as an intersectional identity in the education system.
