Will Assisted Listening Devices be provided for the ceremony?
Assisted listening devices will not be provided. To support communication access, ASL interpreting and real-time captioning will be available during the ceremony.
An Autistic person/person with Autism will be attending the commencement ceremony. What recommendations do you have for supporting their experience?
We hope for all guests to enjoy the event comfortably. Given the number of graduates we will be celebrating, we anticipate large crowds and loud noises. We recognize everyone experiences crowds, noises, and environments differently, so here are several ideas that may support guests before and during the commencement ceremony:
Preparation
Browse online pictures or videos of Santa Ana Stadium and Eddie West Field to provide images of the environment and create opportunity to imagine what the experience may be like.
Discuss feelings about going to the stadium and address any questions or concerns someone may share.
Try to limit (or avoid) other large crowds or group events that day.
Seating
Plan this guest's seating between other members of the party so there is familiarity with people sitting next to them.
If available, an end aisle seat may be a strategy since only one person will be sitting immediately next to them on one side
Reducing Over-Stimulation
For anyone sensitive to noise, wearing earplugs or noise-canceling headphones during louder portions of the event may be helpful.
If sensitive to visual stimuli (i.e. people, movement, glare), wearing sunglasses during earlier portions of the event and/or a hat with a large brim may reduce 'field of view'.
If sensitive to scents/smells, a guest may bring a small object (e.g. lotion or small vial of peppermint oil) that can be used to minimize other scents/smells.
Working Through Over-Stimulation
Guests may take brief breaks from the crowd by exiting the grandstand seating area and finding an area that may be more comfortable.
Try listening to calming music through earbuds/headphones.
Switch focus from the environment to something engaging on a phone or tablet.
Try using a quiet fidget device or manipulative.
