1. We can help with any type of writing assignment (except tests) for any course. We can also help with resumes, cover letters, personal statements, and scholarship essays. Come by at any stage in the writing process from brainstorming ideas to editing the final draft.
2. We also provide tutoring for other classes offered at SAC including in the sciences, social sciences and Career and Technical programs.
3. The Learning Center is a supplement to the classroom. We provide advice and assist with writing skills and comprehension of class content. Do not expect a tutor to write the assignment for you, to predict your grade or replace going to class. They will not provide class notes for classes you've missed.
4. We have several options available:
a. In-person Tutoring – Work directly with a tutor in the Learning Center on your assignment or work on your own but ask tutors short, specific questions as they come up.
b. Group Workshops – Attend group workshops on popular writing topics throughout the semester. Check on Canvas for schedules. Workshops may be held in-person or virtually.
c. Virtual live tutoring - Work with a tutor online through Zoom, a videoconferencing tool. Log on to Online Tutoring on your Canvas Dashboard. Click on the day/time under the blue Virtual Front Desk on the home page. That will take you to our Virtual Front Desk Zoom session where you will be greeted by Learning Center staff. If you want to meet with a tutor, you will be put into a breakout room with the tutor.
5. Writing tutoring sessions can last up to 30 minutes. If no one else is waiting at the end of your time, you may then continue to work with the tutor. If you are having DOTAs reviewed, you are limited to 2 DOTAs per session.
6. Tutoring sessions other than writing are 45 minutes long and are normally limited to one appointment per subject per week so that we can provide service to as many students as possible. However, you may call to see if a same day appointment is available due to a cancellation. If so, you are welcome to take that appointment even if you have already had one earlier in the week.
7. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of instructor expectations for any assignment. Please bring a copy of the assignment you are working on, including any rubrics, guidelines, readings or handouts the professor has provided. You should also bring any work you have done on the assignment so far.
8. Be considerate of others. Work quietly, use headphones, and silence cell phones and electronic devices. If you need to take a call, please step outside of the Learning Center. Also, you should not bring guests such as friends, children, or relatives.
9. We will provide confirmation of your visit to the Learning Center upon request. A certificate will be sent to you via email which you can forward to your instructor if required.
10. All services in the Learning Center are free to SAC and SCE students. However, you must register for the Learning Center LRN section each semester. Registration is a two-step process and directions are found on the Learning Center website.
