What is the Santa Ana College Veterans Upward Bound Program?
The SAC VUB program provides eligible veterans with a comprehensive academic program which provides the veteran with critical core subject study and review in preparation for college placement and entrance exams when matriculating at a post-secondary institution.
How does the VUB program work?
The VUB program targets motivated veterans with a high school diploma who have no college experience or have dropped out of college for a period of three or more years.
Students who have not been in an academic environment for an extended period of time are usually not well prepared for college placement testing and as a result will place in remedial courses. Numerous studies indicate that placement into remedial coursework has been a key factor contributing to students dropping out of college or failing to persist to complete a degree.
The Veterans Upward Bound program provides participants with a pre-college preparation program aimed at building academic skills needed to place in graduation level courses thereby accelerating post-secondary completion time for a Bachelor’s degree.
For participants who have difficulty attending classes in person due to a disability or transportation issue, instruction in the same subject areas will be available online. Both methods provide customized open entry/open exit, self-paced instruction based on assessment of the participant’s academic skills levels.
The VUB program will also expand the student’s knowledge base of critical need-to-know areas such as financial aid, veterans benefits, career exploration and college entry requirements through the use of in-class and on-line workshops. VUB participants and their families will also have the opportunity to attend campus tours at CSU Fullerton and UC Irvine.
VUB participants will receive supplemental academic assistance through the VUB Tutoring program and instructional programs. VUB Counselors and Advisors will also be available for participants to address any questions or concerns via Facebook and through regular on campus appointments.
What other college resources are available to me?
All VUB participants are eligible to receive additional assistance through the Veterans Resource Center, Learning Center/Tutoring Center, Disabled Students Program Services, and Math Learning Center.
What outside agencies are available for VUB participants?
The VUB program in partnership with the Veterans Services Center, the Orange Country Health Care Services Agency as well as a number of other veterans organizations are dedicated to helping program veterans with any needs and services to support and ensure the veterans’ success.
