The new Science Center will hold it's grand opening on January 26th
SANTA ANA, Calif. – Santa Ana College (SAC) celebrates the community college's new $70 million Science Center on Jan. 26, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for SAC students and the general community.
The new 64,785-square-foot Science Center was made possible by
Measure Q Bond Funds and will serve as a home to the college's science programs, including astronomy, earth science, geology, physics, chemistry and biology. This building will also include the Science Learning Center, which will be equipped with computers, microscopes and labs where students can receive one-on-one assistance from faculty as well as conduct independent/group study and research. The building contains several open spaces and areas for students and faculty to collaborate. The three-story building features 15 laboratories and four large classrooms.
“We are so excited to finally open the doors to Santa Ana College's new Science Center, a place we hope will draw more students pursuing academic degrees and careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics," said Dr. Annebelle Nery, president of Santa Ana College. “With this center, we look forward to seeing our students and faculty interact and collaborate together and foster growth in the areas of science."
The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be followed by a reception hosted by the Santa Ana College Foundation. Keynote speaker will be Dr. James Nguyen ('98), a SAC alumnus and young prodigy who started SAC at the age of 12 and is now a leading interventional cardiologist in Florida. Nguyen was a biology student who eventually transferred to the University of California, Irvine, and entered medical school at the age of 19. Nguyen was inducted into SAC's Hall of Fame in 2011 and also worked for two years as a teacher's assistant in SAC's Department of Physiology.
“Very thankful for Santa Ana College and everything that they've done to help me achieve my educational goals," said Dr. Nguyen. He says that SAC cultivated his interest in science.
After the grand opening, on Jan. 27–28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., SAC invites the community to participate in an open house and campus tour of the much-anticipated Science Center. The open house will include a resource fair, giveaways, free food, and opportunities for the community to meet and speak with staff and faculty. All events are free and open to the public. No registration is required.
