As the faculty and students of Santa Ana College grapple with California’s increasing financial woes and their impact on the school, the work of the Santa Ana College Foundation is more critical than ever, Board President Tony Ellis says.

“Each year we take a strategic look at needs that are directly related to students, as pointed out by the different departments of Santa Ana College,” he explains. “This includes materials, equipments, field trips--anything of benefit to the learning experience. The faculty prioritize; then, I believe that it is our responsibility to find funding.”

California Budget Crisis Slams Community Colleges

Each day the news media bombards us with dire financial news, on both the state and national levels. Its toll on our educational system continues to unfold, but it is clear that the impact will be significant. The current California budget crisis is having a profound effect on planning and programming at both the community college and the university level. Unfortunately, Santa Ana College is not immune to the crisis.

El Don Receives National Award

What’s In a word? On Saturday November 1, el Don, the Santa Ana College newsletter, was officially inducted into The Associated Collegiate Press College Journalism Hall of Fame, the pinnacle of national recognition for college journalism, at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Kansas City. The el Don was the only college honored this year, and several staff members were on-hand to receive the award and participate in the conference, thanks to support from the Santa Ana College Foundation.

David Valentin Receives State Distinguished Alumni Award

At its 2008 annual convention held November 20-22, the Community College League of California honored Santa Ana College alum David Valentin with one of five 2008 Distinguished Alumni Awards. This recognition was earned in stiff competition among graduates of community colleges spanning the state of California.

ALUMNI PROFILE
Dr. Julio Caceres

In his native Colombia, Dr. Julio Caceres was regarded as a prominent dentist and a union leader. As president of the state chapter of his national union, he became embroiled in challenges to the social security system. He was also on the union’s national leadership committee. Several harrowing events in an increasingly violent situation made it clear that his life was in danger. A hasty departure was necessary.
