The mission of the Santa Ana College Chemistry Department is to provide opportunity and means for all students to successfully achieve a high quality educational in the chemical sciences.
Our faculty uses various methods and technologies designed to help our diverse student population gain and comprehend fundamental content knowledge, become effective written and oral communicators, engage in critical thinking and develop an awareness of the relationship of chemistry to other fields.
The department endeavors to prepare students for direct employment, transfer to four year programs or professional schools, and to become scientifically literate contributors on our campus and in our community.
The department offers an Associate degree in Chemistry which prepares students for a wide variety of occupations or to enter curriculum in a four-year institution leading to a Baccalaureate degree.
Department Characteristics
The Santa Ana Chemistry Department is very representative of our diverse student population currently consisting of five full time and some part-time faculty members from different backgrounds, both male and female.
While several of the faculty holds PhDs, others have earned multiple MS degrees. Many of our faculty members have a vast amount of current industry and recent research experience which is a valued supplement to classroom instruction. The faculty is supported by a staff which consists of one full-time laboratory coordinator and two part-time on-going instructional assistants.
The department provides coursework in five basic areas: general education (chemistry for non-majors), general and organic chemistry, chemistry for nursing/health sciences and physical sciences for educators. Coursework in this department is also required for nine degrees, recommended for four degrees and certificates and a pre-requisite for three courses outside of the chemistry department.
Students receive support (tutoring and topic workshops) in their coursework from the Science Learning Center which is staffed by chemistry faculty and students.
