The Summer and Fall 2019 Canvas Course Shells are
available.
You may notice that there were some changes to the template
this semester. The changes are to align SAC’s template with the CVC/OEI
rubric, to make it easier for faculty to submit courses to the OEI and to
provide a more clear and concise presentation to students. The following
is a summary of the changes:
Home Page: Removed the SAC logo at the top
(instructors are welcome to add a personalize image) and condensed the Quick
Links.
Canvas Syllabus: Changed “Textbook Information”
to “Required Materials” and added examples. Removed the Additional
Information and Course Learning Objective prompts. Many courses are
utilizing Zero Text Cost, Open Educational Resources, or non-traditional course
materials. Required Materials is more clear to students as to everything
that will be needed for the course, not just the text.
Course Information Module: Course Syllabus
page was added to link the Canvas syllabus, and as an additional (optional)
place where faculty can post their course syllabus document. Communication
Plan page was added to align with the OEI rubric. This page provides
students with a clear plan and understanding of how and when their instructor
will be communicating with them throughout the course. Customize Your
Canvas Settings & Access page was added to replace the Configure Your
Settings in Canvas page. It contains the same information but was renamed
and revamped to provide the information in a more concise manner. Accommodations
for Disabilities and Accessibility Support page was added to align with the
OEI rubric, and to provide students with quick, easy access to DSPS
information. Couse Q&A Discussion was updated to
provide students with more clear instructions on how and when to use the forum
in the course. SAC Quest for Online Success assignment was added
unpublished to the module. It can be deleted if not using. Course
Information Summary page was updated to reflect the previous changes.
Student Resource Module: Module was redesigned
to be more concise and compact for students, with easy reference and access to
available SAC resources. The module was moved directly following the
Course Information Module to make it easier for students to locate and access
the resources they need.
Announcements: A pre-course “Getting Started”
Announcement template was added communicating expectations and tasks to help
prepare students for the first day of class. For Online/Hybrid Courses,
an Attendance Reminder (what the students will need to do in order to remain
enrolled in the course) and a sample Week 2 announcement template were
added. If you are not planning on using the provided announcement
templates, remember to delete them.
Discussions: The General Course Q&A
Discussion was modified to provide more clear instructions and better align
with accessibility standards. A sample “Introduction” discussion was
added unpublished to Module 1. Again, if you are not planning on using
the General Couse Q&A Discussion, unpublish or delete it.
Assignments: A sample assignment requiring
students to complete the online student orientation was added
unpublished. Simply publish to utilize it (can be edited and customized
for your course), or delete if you are not planning on using.
Instructor Resources: An Instructor Resources
module was added unpublished (students can not see it). It is intended as
an easy access resource for faculty with information on NetTutor, Proctorio,
and online faculty training workshops.
Pages: Module Structure Requirements &
Example page was added unpublished to Module 1. It is intended to help
faculty structure their modules in alignment with the OEI rubric, and provide
students with a consistent experience throughout the course. Module
Introduction pages were updated to be more visually clear to students and
adhere with accessibility standards.
(Online/Hybrid Only) Proctorio Module: Instructions
were updated and Faculty instructions including sample test instructions were
added to the Faulty Resource Module.
(Online/Hybrid Only) NetTutor Module:
Instructions were revised to be more clear and consolidated.
Tips: It is highly recommended that faculty keeps current summer/spring 2019 template in the course. If faculty is planning on import content from another Canvas courses, delete only the module(s) in current course. Instructions on How to Copy a Course or Import Content in Canvas
