What is Participatory Governance?

Participatory governance (PG) is the process through which students, faculty, staff, and administrators share responsibility in shaping decisions at Santa Ana College. Participatory governance committees provide these four constituency groups with an opportunity to collaborate on key decisions that shape the college’s programs, policies, and priorities. Through shared governance, all voices have a role in ensuring that decisions reflect the diverse perspectives and needs of our community. Students who serve on these committees play an essential part in representing the student body and influencing how the college operates, both inside and outside the classroom.

Why Participatory Governance Matters to Students

Participatory governance matters because the decisions made through this process directly affect the student experience at Santa Ana College.

This is where conversations happen about things students care about, such as campus resources, equity initiatives, student support services, facilities, and budgeting priorities.

When students are included in these discussions, decisions are more inclusive and responsive to real student needs. Student participation helps ensure that policies and practices reflect the lived experiences of the students they are meant to serve.

 How Participatory Governance Works

Participatory governance operates through committees and councils that bring together four constituency groups: students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Meetings are open to the public, agendas are posted in advance, and meeting notes are made available. Students are welcome to attend meetings to learn more about how decisions are made or to stay informed about campus-wide initiatives.

Here’s the basic idea:

  • Campus issues are discussed collaboratively
  • Committees review concerns and develop recommendations
  • Recommendations help inform decisions made by college leadership

In summary, ideas move from conversation to collaboration to action.

All participatory governance meetings are open to the campus community, promoting transparency and shared accountability.

Get Involved

Student representation in participatory governance occurs through the Associated Student Government (ASG). In accordance with ASG bylaws, students must be active ASG members to be considered for appointment as a student representative to a participatory governance committee.

Students interested in serving on a participatory governance committee are encouraged to join ASG and participate in its leadership and appointment processes.

Learn more about ASG and apply here:  Get Involved.
