Mersedeh Mehrina is among the few women who have built a legal career in Iran, dedicating over 15 years to practicing civil law and advocating for the rights of women and children. Her unwavering commitment and compassion earned her a reputation as a trusted attorney, often taking on highly sensitive cases within the justice system.
At the peak of her career, however, Mehrina faced a major setback. After defending a woman in a controversial case, she was temporarily stripped of her license to practice. But this obstacle didn't deter her—it fueled her determination. With resilience, she returned to her studies, retook the bar exam, and successfully re-earned her license.
"For me, law is more than just a profession, it's my passion and calling," Mehrina shared. "I'm a candid, courageous advocate by nature. I feel most alive when I'm standing up for what's fair."
When Mehrina immigrated to the United States, she faced a new set of challenges. The language barrier and the daunting process of transferring her Iranian legal education to the U.S. made her hesitant to pursue law again. That changed when a close friend introduced her to an online ESL course at Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education.
Rebuilding Confidence Through Language
Now living in Northern California, Mehrina enrolled in the Intermediate Low ESL303 class.
"Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education gave me the tools to reset and rebuild my confidence," she said. "I chose ESL not just to improve my English, but to prepare myself academically and professionally. The supportive environment also helped me form new friendships and feel at home."
Looking Ahead: A Return to Law
Twice in her life, a judge in her hometown and a college professor, encouraged Mehrina to strengthen her English to re-enter the legal field.
She is now setting her sights on law school. Her next steps are preparing for the TOEFL and LSAT exams, with the ultimate goal of earning a J.D. and continuing the legal journey she began in Iran.
"I've shifted my mindset," she said. "The universe has given me a second chance—a safe space to chase a new dream. My journey continues, and I hope to help other immigrants find their voice and pursue their dreams, just as I have."
