Overcoming his fear of starting over in a new country, Feng Gao abandoned his longlasting career as a salesman in China.

“After immigrating to the United States, I realized that I had lost my biggest advantage, which was my native tongue,” Gao said.

Striving to rebuild his career, Gao’s research led him to Santa Ana College’s School of Continuing Education where he was inspired to enroll in two hands-on programs, HVAC and construction, to transition into a new field.

“Santa Ana College stood out to me because of its strong reputation and accessible continuing education opportunities,” he said. “Choosing to move from a sales background into a technical field like HVAC and construction was a big step, but I saw it as an opportunity to rebuild my future from the ground up.”

Despite Gao’s limited English speaking skills at the time, Professor Mario from the HVAC program, Professor Andre from the construction program and Professor Wood from the welding program left a profound impact on his educational journey.

“They didn’t just teach technical skills, they gave me confidence,” Gao said. “Their kindness and dedication made a huge difference during a period when I was adapting to a new country, a new language and a completely new career path.”

Continuing education gave Gao a clear path forward during a turbulent time to build a solid technical foundation and gain the confidence to enter an unfamiliar industry.

Embodying the mindset of a tradesperson, Gao’s mastery in tool usage, system basics, and safety procedures prepared him for his current job as a sheet metal worker apprentice at the Sheet Metal Union.

Some of his responsibilities include assisting with installation, handling materials, supporting experienced workers and learning to follow job site instructions accurately.

“There is a unique kind of joy in accomplishing a goal that was once believed to be out of reach, whether it is taking apart your first motor, repairing your first air conditioner or welding your first seam,” he said. “What matters is the moment you realize you have surpassed your previous limitations.”

As many immigrants face the life-changing decision to pivot from careers in their home countries, Gao assures students that their willingness to learn at Santa Ana College’s School of Continuing Education will gradually strengthen their confidence and sense of direction toward their aspiring career path.

“Education is a guiding light that allows us to regain control, rebuild confidence and move forward with the ability to foster a brighter future for ourselves,” Gao said.
