(Santa Ana, CA) - Santa Ana College (SAC) is celebrating indigenous heritage with a morning of cultural and educational exhibitions, food, dance and master storyteller Jacque Tahuka-Nunez on Monday, March 4.
A resource fair will also take place and will include the following organizations: The Southern California Indian Center and Walking Shield, California Native Vote Project, American Indian Scholarship Foundation, Sacred Hearts Native Domestic Violence Advocacy Group, Intertribal Youth Council of Orange County, Native Veterans and SAC Associated Student Government, SAC Outreach, and SAC’s Veteran Office.
“We are pleased to provide this event to our students and the community,” said SAC President Dr. Linda Rose. “We want to support indigenous groups within Santa Ana College’s service area and share indigenous stories from superb storytellers like Jacque.”
Tahuka-Nunez is a singer, director and writer and will perform at the event. Part of the California indigenous Acjachemen tribe, Tahuka-Nunez prides herself on preserving and passing her culture through the oral storytelling tradition. She has shared her stories at Disneyland, the Los Angeles and Anaheim Convention Centers, Special Arts Festival, Kavli Performing Arts Center, and at hundreds of schools, libraries and non-profits. Journeys Through the Past presentation, which educates students the Acjachemen Nation through stories, songs, tools, instruments, games and clothing into schools and on stages to further preserve indigenous cultures.
This free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Santa Ana College amphitheater, 1530 W. 17th Street in Santa Ana.
