(Santa Ana, CA) Santa Ana College (SAC) announced today that the National Hispanic Business Women Association (NHBWA) awarded SAC student Jonathan Lopez Renteria an educational scholarship. The scholarship was presented on May 23, at Disneyland’s Paradise Pier Hotel at the NHBWA’s 19th Annual Business Women of the Year Awards and Scholarships Luncheon. This is the third consecutive year that Lopez Renteria was awarded the scholarship.
Born and raised in Orange County, Lopez Renteria is a SAC student working toward a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. When not in school, Lopez Renteria balances the responsibilities of being a provider and caregiver for his grandmother. During the 2017 school year, Lopez Renteria volunteered more than 250 hours in school programs that help single parents with food, clothes, and support. Once he graduates, Jonathan is committed to continuing his involvement in his diverse community of Orange County.
“We are so pleased to offer opportunities to students like Jonathan, who wish to pursue higher education,” said Jasmine Quillares, NHBWA president. “To date, the NHBWA has awarded 240 educational scholarships to deserving students and looks forward to awarding many more in the coming years.”
“After a long year of caring for both my mother and my grandmother, being awarded the NHBWA scholarship meant a tremendous amount to both my family and me – a shining moment at a difficult time,” said Lopez Renteria. “I reached my achievements through the support and guidance of many people at Santa Ana College. The wonderful women in SAC’s TRIO program have guided me through my academic journey since the beginning. With their help, I was able to take advantage of all the tutoring resources provided on campus. They’ve also been a resource to discuss difficult personal problems. I also want to thank the great people in EOPS, B2E, and my wonderful math professors Ben Hager and Ken Sill.”
