(Santa Ana, Calif.) – Santa Ana College (SAC) has been recognized as a 2023 Excellence in Placement honoree by
The Campaign for College Opportunity for ensuring that Latinx students enroll in transfer-level courses in English campuswide, an indicator of higher retention and academic success.
Specifically, SAC received prestigious designations in two categories:
Equity Designation: Latinx Transfer-Level English Enrollment – For supporting 100% of Latinx students to enroll directly into transfer-level English coursework.
Campuswide Transfer-Level English Enrollment – For supporting
100% of students to enroll directly into transfer-level English coursework.
The Excellence in Placement awards grew out of legislation signed into law in 2017 (AB 705), which enforced the adoption of equitable placement practices for students of color in community colleges. Research studies have shown that students entering community colleges and placed in remedial level coursework felt discouraged and were less likely to complete their degrees to transfer. Building on this landmark policy and evidence, SAC ensured that students were placed in transfer-level courses to advance student success and promote retention.
“At SAC, we foster the academic growth and needs of our diverse student population, and we are proud to be one of 116 California community colleges that help make dreams of getting a degree reality," said Dr. Annebelle Nery, president of SAC. “For our Latinx student population, we understand the importance of equitable placement to empower their academic potential, so they feel supported in transferring and furthering their educational dreams."
SAC will be recognized at the second annual Excellence in Placement award ceremony on May 31, 2023, in Los Angeles, alongside 56 other California community colleges for implementing enrollment in transfer-level courses for incoming students.
