About Professor Mowrer
Melanie Mowrer is professor and department chair of the English for Multilingual Students
(EMLS) program at Santa Ana College. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English
from Moravian College, a Master of Arts degree in Education from United States International
University, and a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate
from the University of California, Irvine. With a deep commitment to language learning
and student success, Melanie brings over 20 years of academic expertise to the classroom
and a strong commitment to English language learners.
Melanie began her teaching career at Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education
in 2002, where she served in multiple roles, including teaching all levels of ESL
and coordinating both the High School Subjects and Citizenship programs. In 2009,
she transitioned to the credit side of Santa Ana College and joined the EMLS team.
She is known for her creative, student-centered assignments, memorable whale-watching
field trips, and collaborative cross-disciplinary activities. Above all, Melanie excels
at building a strong sense of community in her classes—actively engaging students
in campus life through performing arts events, lectures, and festivals—so they feel
connected, supported, and proud to be part of the Santa Ana College community.
Beyond the classroom, Melanie is an active member of the American Association of University
Women (AAUW) Laguna Beach, an organization dedicated to advancing gender equity for
women and girls. In her free time, she enjoys reading, riding her bike around the
Balboa Peninsula, and entertaining friends and family in her seaside home.
