Department's Vision:
The Mathematics Department will promote and support a comprehensive
and dynamic learning environment that meets the changing needs of a diverse
global student population.
Department's Mission:
The Mathematics Department provides an exemplary mathematics program
that prepares students to be life-long learners and responsible, numerate
citizens. The department provides meaningful support services, responds to the
changing environment of mathematics education and promotes effective
instructional strategies with students actively participating in the learning
process.
Department's Characteristics:
The Mathematics Department serves a variety of student populations
and their course of study varies and depends upon their major and their
individual goals. The Mathematics Department recognizes that learning extends
beyond the classroom and participates in creating helpful workshops, cohorts and
learning communities to increase student success.
Department's
Trends:
The Mathematics Department recognizes the need for change within our
developmental classrooms. We are analyzing both the Emporium Model and the
Replacement Model to determine which will provide the best alternative for our
STEM Majors, non-STEM majors and our accelerated math
courses.
Department's Strengths:
The mathematics faculty at SAC is the department’s greatest
strength. The faculty is innovative and experienced and enjoys communicating
their enthusiasm for mathematics and the learning process with their students.
They view each student as an individual and hold students responsible with high
expectations of achievement for them.
Department's Areas for
Improvement:
There is a need to support student success. The Mathematics
Department is looking into course REDESIGN and accelerated courses to address
this area of need.
Department's Opportunities:
Working alongside the SAC Dean of Student Affairs, the Mathematics
Department has the opportunity to participate in round table discussions with
the SAUSD high school math departments to pursue improved student preparation
and ultimately a more satisfactory academic success in math for our first year
students.
Department's Challenges:
Due to the lack of budgetary resources and limitations to
communication with over 55 part-time faculty members, the Mathematics Department
has several challenging hurdles to overcome in their endeavor to implement a
cohesive course REDESIGN.
Department's 4-Year Strategic
Directions:
1. Student achievement
2. Use of technology
3.
Innovation
4. Facilities
Department's Planning Impact on
Others:
Mathematics is often the gatekeeper course for other majors and
student transferability. The Mathematics Department’s efforts to implement
change that will not only increase student success within the classroom, but
will also generate student accomplishment within other majors as well as SAC
graduation rates.
