WHAT The KinderCaminata program marks its 18th year of operation. Through the program, thousands of local kindergarten students have their first opportunity to glimpse college life and learn about higher education. More than 30 interactive booths will introduce youngsters to a wide range of career options. Kindergarten students will meet two Santa Ana Police Department officers, view an Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Humvee, and be introduced to a rescue bloodhound. The youngsters will gain a glimpse into the world of broadcast journalism when a camera crew from the Santa Ana College (SAC) video/television program put them on camera and interview them.

WHY Kindergarten children are introduced, through hands-on demonstrations and exhibits, to career opportunities available as a result of a college education. The primary goal is to plant the seed of education at its earliest stages. The event is traditionally held near or on the birth date (March 31) of Cesar Chavez, the renowned United Farm Workers leader. On the day of the event kindergartners are given caps with Chavez’s motto, “Sí, se puede” (Yes, you can).
HOW KinderCaminata is a non-profit organization supported by an annual fundraising dinner, Salute to Chancellors, Presidents, Superintendents, organizations, community, colleges and university contributors. A volunteer board of directors composed of the four Orange County community college district chancellors, university, business and community leaders governs KinderCaminata.
