The Talent Search Program is broken up into two components: the High School Component and the Intermediate School Component.  Below are descriptions of how the program works within each component.


High School Component
9th-12th Grade

College Visitation
At least three times a year, students will have an opportunity to visit various colleges and universities throughout Southern California.

College Planning
Students will be assisted in making the appropriate course selections in high school in order to make them UC eligible.

Financial Aid/Scholarships
Most seniors in the SAUSD are given a workshop on how to complete the FAFSA form through the Student Outreach office.  Academic Talent Search students receive follow-up sessions with the Academic Talent Search staff.  In addition, financial aid workshops are held for parents.  Students are also assisted with scholarship searches and in completing their applications.

SAT/ACT Preparation Workshops
Test preparation workshops are held in an effort to help boost scores.  Workshops are also held for students to assist them in registering for the test.

PSAT/SAT I/SAT II/ACT Fee Waivers
Test registration fee waivers are provided to all students who meet the income eligibility requirements.

College Applications Workshops
Workshops are held to assist students with completing their applications accurately.  Academic Talent Search staff also provide assistance in developing the personal statement essay required for the UC system.

College Applications Fee Waivers
Fee waivers and fee waiver applications are provided to all eligible seniors (see your Student Services Specialist for details).

Cultural Presentations
Students will be exposed to various cultural presentations at colleges and theaters in their community.

Parent Participation
Orientations are held to introduce parents to the Talent Search Program and to meet staff members.  Special meetings are held to cover special topics e.g., understanding high school and pre-college requirements, how to become a citizen, etc.

Intermediate School Component
6th-8th Grade                                                        

After School Program
The after school program is utilized to create an environment where students can interact confidently with others that share similar goals.  Meetings are held once a week after school, and students will be exposed to a variety of the following experiences and activities:

College Preparatory Planning
Students will be introduced to the UC A-G requirements for college admission, choosing the right college, how to complete a college application, and the value of a college education.

Team Building
Various team-building activities will be held to teach students to work together towards a common goal.

Test Taking
Practice SAT exams will be taken along with test taking preparation.

Goal Setting/Decision Making 
Students will be shown the importance of building high self-esteem.

Career Planning
Students will have the opportunity to learn about career choices through workshops and speakers, as well as participate in a field trip to local government.

College/Cultural Field Trips
Excursions to various colleges and universities as well as to cultural presentations will be held throughout the year.

Summer Science and Technology Day Program
Each summer up to 30 students can participate in a day program designed to expose students to science and technology.  Students will take two classes a day, one in science, and one in web page editing.  In addition, they will attend special presentations by experts in various fields of science and technology, and participate in a career presentation.  Students will also go on field trips to enhance their learning.  In past years students have visited such places as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, the Discovery Science Center, the San Diego Wild Animal Park, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, the Long Beach Aquarium, and Blizzard Entertainment.
