Work
In Progress
Overview
Purpose
The Nealley Library is the campus leader in selecting, organizing,
locating, and
delivering information resources for the Santa Ana College
(SAC) community.
The
Library Web site is integral to the delivery of useful and easily
accessible Library resources and services to the SAC audiences. The
Library Web site overtime will
provide a more user-centered emphasis with
the creation of a framework more
conducive to locating information
quickly, developing additional value-added content
and online assistance,
promoting user feedback and interactivity, and promoting
outreach services
to faculty for course enhancement.
Target Audiences
The Library serves a number of different audiences: SAC
Students (campus, offsite, distance education, etc.), SAC Faculty and
Staff, SAC Administration, SCC Community, Extended Education, RSCCD
Community, Local Santa Ana Community, and Others.

Library Web Team Membership
An open call for
participation on the Library Web Team was offered to all Librarians in
March 2003. Participation is voluntary. A broad range of expertise
and opinions were sought. The Team currently includes full-time
librarians, Adjunct Faculty, as well as
classified staff. A
Web Team coordinator was designated. The Library Administrator
is an ex-officio member.
Library
Designated Web Editors (DWE)
DWE are responsible for webifying content
received by assigned Content Providers.
The DWE applies the Library
Standards and Guidelines, the Library Web site Updating Process policy,
and appropriate Templates. The DWE assesses each Web page for compliance
with ADA accessibility.
Library Content
Providers
Content Providers are responsible to
creating and maintaining their information, responding to inquires, and
updating their information as necessary. Content Providers may not use
materials that are prohibited by law or disallowed by licenses, contracts,
copyrights, or University regulation. Content Providers are expected to
read and
adhere to Library Web Standards and Guidelines, Library Web site
Updating Process,
and use of approved Templates for Subject Guides
(Recommended sites by Department) and other Guides (Pathfinders).
The Web Team Coordinator.
The Web Development Coordinator acts as systems administrator for the
Nealley Web
site, is responsible for site and systems documen-tation, and coordinates
Web-based applications development within the Library.
The Web
Committee Liaison. The Campus Web Committee Liaison is the official
liaison to the
College community concerning the publication of pages on Nealley’s Website.
Training
Web authoring workshop, offered by the
Santa Ana College Technology Training Implementation Program Subcommittee, is a
series of three 3-hour classes that run
every month.
If you
would like to learn about web authoring, register for one of the
Web
Page Authoring classes.
- Official Library
pages must be stored on the College Web server. This insures
that
College pages are effectively and efficiently backed up.
- All Content Providers are
responsible for keeping their own Web
files current.
- The Library has the
right to remove or revise any materials on the Web that do
not adhere to policies.
- If pages are misrepresentative,
outdated, contain broken links, or do not conform to Web policies or
page requirements, the Web Team Coordinator may make the changes or may remove those files from the
public Web site after obtaining
express permission from the Content
Provider. - A page will not be
published unless it has passed the Web Page Requirements
Checklist.
Minor Corrections
are submitted to the
appropriate DWE either as a printed copy of the Web page
marked
up with the corrections or via email with an explanation. The goal for
completing minor
corrections is 3 working days.
Major Corrections
or a sizeable amount of new content are submitted to the appropriate DWE
in an electronic
form either via email or on diskette. The goal for completing major
corrections or new
content is 7-10 working days.
New Web Pages
are submitted to the appropriate DWE in an electronic form either via
email or on diskette. Content for Pathfinders and Recommended Web sites
by Department needs
to conform to Template Guidelines. Instructions from
the content provider to the DWE are submitted to include where the new
page is to be linked from. The goal for adding
a new page is 7-10 working
days.
All new and revised
Web pages will have the date created and revised recorded, the content
provider’s initials, and DWE’s initials. DWEs will monitor their assigned
pages
for broken links
on a monthly basis. Content providers for Pathfinders and
Recommended Web
sites by
Department will be notified about broken links and will
advise the DWE as
to what action
should be taken.
The Complete Publication Procedure is outlined in the steps below:
Contact the Designated Web
Editor
Contact one of the Designated Web Editor
when you are ready to develop a page(s)
for the Nealley Library Web site. The
Web Editor will follow the Web page
publication procedure.
Provide the following information
The Content Provider name; the Web Editor name;
the name of any HTML
editing programs
you may be using (i.e., Front Page 2000, Word 2000,
Netscape Composer, etc.);
the designated location of this page.
Web Team Review the Page(s)
Web Editor will announce via e-mail
when this page ready to be reviewed online; will specify
the amount of
time allowed for reviewing and commenting.
Publishing the Page
At the end of the review period, if there
is no objection made, the Web Editor may publish
the page. If there is
disagreement the Web Team Coordinator will put it on the agenda item
for
the next Web Team Meeting.
Work Within the WIP
Directory
All pages are initially
constructed under the "wip" (Work In Progress) directory, found
at
http://www.sac.edu/students/library/nealley/wip. The WIP directory is
located on
the Web server and is an electronic "workroom" of pages
that are to be reviewed
before actually published on our site. Advantages of Maintaining a WIP
directory
(Source: Monroe
Community College http://www.monroecc.edu/depts/webpolicies/webpandp.htm)
- It reduces the
problem of incorrect or "broken" links created by developing Web pages
off-site.
- It allows DWEs
to design accurately sized graphics, tables, etc., by viewing their
pages as if they were live (i.e., published on the WWW with the
Navigation Bar included to the left of the page).
- It allows DWEs
test the accuracy and behavior of their links.
- It provides a
familiarity with how the actual Web site is set up, allowing
DWEs to
identify and link to other html pages within the
site.
- It provides the Web Development Team access to your pages.
- It provides daily
backups of all files located on the Web server.
