Creating a Reference List Using APA Style

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) covers the research process, plagiarism, guidelines of writing style such as the physical format of the paper, and documentation of references. APA style is used by writers in several health-related and social sciences disciplines (allied health, exercise sciences, and nursing) and by some professions.

General Tips

  • Label reference list, References.

  • Alphabetize reference lists by authors' last names.

  • Never use the full first name of an author.  Use initials only.

  • If you have more than one work by a particular author, list them by publication date, oldest to newest (a 1991 article would appear before a 1997 article).

  • Use "&" instead of "and" when listing more than one author of a single work.

  • Capitalize only the first word of a title and subtitle of a work.

  • Italicize titles of websites, books, and periodicals (magazines, journals, newspapers).

  • If your reference continues to a second line, double-space and use a hanging indent for the second line and all subsequent lines.
