We are introducing the idea of "Book of the Year" for
the 2009-2010. We hope this will become an annual event. Our
inaugural book is The House on
Mango Street which is celebrating it's 25th anniversary of
publication.
The House of Mango Street is a seminal work in Latina writing
and in Hispanic Literature. It deals with a young Latina girl,
Esperanza Cordero, growing up in a Chicago barrio.
Esperanza is a keen observer of her community and the people who
live there. She is determined to leave her impoverished
barrio behind; yet she knows she wants to return to make a
contribution to others.
The key event in our celebration is a theatrical adaption of the
book. The play will debut in Phillips Hall from October 15
through 25. See
