Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Program

The Program
Santa Ana College is proud to be a partner with Microsoft in offering the Microsoft Office Specialist program. Santa Ana College/Business Applications Department is an official testing site for Microsoft Office Specialist certification testing.

The Microsoft Office Specialist program is a training and certification program that verifies a user’s desktop computer skills using the Microsoft Office applications. Upon successful completion of a hands-on exam, the user is issued a certificate by Microsoft Corporation. The Microsoft Office Specialist program is available for the five Microsoft Office 2003 applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook, at both the Core and Expert levels. This testing program is available to students and community members.

In addition to validating your knowledge and proficiency, the program gives you a competitive edge in the job market. About 90 percent of the Fortune 500 companies use Microsoft Office products—so chances are very good that you are one of the many people using Office to get your work done. You may even know more about how to use Office products than most people. Now you can prove it—and give yourself and your organization a competitive edge.

How can Santa Ana College help you to become a Microsoft Office Specialist?
As noted above Santa Ana College is an official testing site for the Microsoft Office Specialist exams. Students and community members can sign up to take a test in the Business Division office, Chavez building, A103. Call (714) 564-6773 or (714) 564-6750 to make an appointment for the test or for additional information.

Buy a Voucher First
Before you take the test you must purchase a voucher at the SAC bookstore for $60 for each exam you wish to take. These vouchers include a free retake if you do not pass on the first try. Many employers pay the fee for their employees to take the exams.

How can you prepare for the tests?
You can practice taking the Microsoft Office Specialist tests by registering for .5 units of Business Applications 016, Computer Office Modules. This class meets in room A228 where there are several Microsoft Office Specialist practice programs available. If you complete 4 testing sessions with a grade of 70% or higher you earn .5 unit of credit. The hours for this class vary. Check the class schedule for current hours. If the currently listed hours do not fit your schedule contact the instructor to make arrangements to access these practice programs at your convenience.

The Business Applications Department also offers a Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Preparation class (Business Applications 043). This class is offered each semester. Check the class schedule for time and dates. This class can be taken to prepare for any of the Microsoft Office Specialist exams. Students who register for this class should already be familiar with the particular program for which they want to take the exam. Practice tests and instructor coaching will be available in this class. You receive .5 units of credit when you complete four practice tests.

How do you decide which test to take?

Information at the www.microsoft.com\officespecialist web site reviews the skills you must demonstrate to successfully complete each level of test. The Office 2003 version tests include: Word 2003, Excel 2003, PowerPoint 2003, Access 2003, and Outlook 2003 at the Core level for basic users. At the Expert level tests include Word 2003 and Excel 2003.

What are the tests like?
The tests are not written tests. They are hands-on real-world assignments based on the way you actually use your computer. The test runs along with Microsoft Office and provides you with tasks to perform on a real document. You work at your own pace, but you do have a time limit. Most exams can be completed in less than an hour. You receive your score upon completion of the test.
